Choosing A Scooter
Choosing the Right Scooter for You
Choosing a scooter can be a difficult decision to make. Below are some tips to make shopping for a scooter easier. There are 3 main questions to consider when purchasing a scooter:
Will my scooter be primarily used indoors or outdoors?
Consider the following:
Turning Radius: This refers to the length of the tightest turn that the scooter can make. This will be important if the scooter will be used mostly indoors. A tighter turning radius will allow you to access smaller spaces.
Battery Charge Range: This refers to the distance of travel that you will get from one full battery charge. This is important if you plan to use your scooter mostly outdoors, or away from the battery charger for long periods of time.
Stability: The stability of the scooter is an important factor for outdoor use. A four wheeled scooter will often provide more stability over uneven surfaces.
What is my weight requirement?
Consider the weight capacity of the scooter. If you or a loved one is within 20 to 30 pounds of the weight limit, we recommend choosing a different scooter with a higher weight capacity.
Will I be traveling often with my scooter?
Consider the transportability and weight of the scooter. Many of the scooters have the ability to break down into a number of lighter pieces for easy transport. You should also consider the weight of the heaviest piece. Vehicle lifts are also available for heavier mobility scooters.
There are five main categories of scooters to consider. The descriptions below will help you decide which type of scooter will best fit your needs.
3-Wheel Travel Scooters
The three wheel travel scooters will generally be the lightest and easiest to transport. If you travel often and plan on taking your scooter with you on frequent trips, the three wheel travel scooter is right for you. The three wheel scooter provides a better turning radius, making it the easiest to use indoors.
The four wheel travel scooters will provide more stability than their three wheel counterparts. The four wheel travel scooters are also better for outdoor use. They are also lighter and easier to transport than the standard scooters.
Easy to transport and less expensive than standard size scooters.
Best for users under 225 lbs.
Provide increased stability for slightly uneven terrain.
Slightly greater turning radius, so not as easy to use indoors.
Three wheeled standard scooters are heavier and more stable than travel scooters. The three wheel standard scooters can handle uneven terrain outdoor, and are maneuverable enough for indoor use with a better turning radius. Standard scooters are also heavier because they include a heavier and longer lasting battery.
Faster, heavier, more comfortable.
Larger batteries provide 20-25 miles per charge.
Larger models require a vehicle lift for transporting.
The four wheel standard scooters are best for outdoor use. They have a higher ground clearance, longer battery life, and more stability. They have a higher weight capacity and longer battery life than travel scooters.
The significant advantage of the Heavy Duty scooters is the weight capacity that it provides. Our Heavy Duty scooters can support up to 500 lbs. These scooters also include the longest lasting batteries, with full charges lasting up to 30 miles of usage.
